Split, merge & edit orders

Real orders do not always arrive in the shape you want to ship them. All three reshaping tools live on the order detail page (/orders/:id).

Splitting divides an order into an in-stock part and a backorderedBackorderAn order waiting on stock that could not be reserved. When stock arrives, it is reserved for the orders waiting on it, which are then picked and packed as usual. Read more → part. The in-stock half ships today; the rest waits for stock without holding up the customer’s whole parcel.

This is the standard answer to a partially-allocated order: rather than holding everything until the last unit lands, ship what you have and keep one clean record of what is outstanding.

Merging combines several orders going to the same address into one shipment. One pick, one box, one label, one parcel through the door — and the customer gets one delivery instead of three.

You can add lines, remove lines and change quantities, with a preview before anything commits. The preview matters: an edit changes what is reserved, what needs picking and what the customer is charged, and you should see all of that before it happens rather than after.

Two related behaviours sit alongside these tools:

  • Capture payment at fulfillment — payment is captured automatically when the order is fulfilled, rather than at checkout. It is a per-warehouse policy, set on the warehouse (/settings/warehouses/:id).
  • A risk queue flags suspicious orders for review before they reach the floor, so a possible-fraud order never quietly gets picked.
  • Order detail — where all three tools live.
  • Holds — the other way to stop an order.
  • Warehouses — where the capture-at-fulfillment policy is set.
