Glossary

Warehouse vocabulary, defined once. Terms that appear inline elsewhere in these docs link back to this page.

Where a plain-English name exists, the app uses it — see Plain-English names for what got renamed and what was deliberately kept.

Available

Also known as: Available quantity

On hand minus committed minus unavailable — what is left to sell after existing orders have taken their share and held-back stock (damaged, quality control, safety stock, a blocked lot’s units) is set aside. It is the number Shopify shows as available.

Available to promise

Also known as: ATP

What you can genuinely commit to a customer right now, taking existing reservations into account. Floormode spells this out rather than using the industry abbreviation.

Backorder

Also known as: Backordered, Back order

An order waiting on stock that could not be reserved. When stock arrives, it is reserved for the orders waiting on it, which are then picked and packed as usual.

Bin

Also known as: Location, Bin location

A specific place stock sits. Every bin has a type — receiving, quality check, quarantine, bulk, pick, packing, staging or returns — which tells the app how to treat what is in it.

Blind count

Also known as: Blind counting

A count where the counter never sees the expected quantity, so the number they report is genuinely independent rather than a confirmation of what the system already believed.

Cartonization

Also known as: Box selection

Choosing the cheapest suitable box for an order from your box catalog, using item dimensions — and splitting into several boxes where one will not do.

Committed

Also known as: Committed quantity, Reserved for orders

Units already promised to open orders and therefore no longer freely sellable, even though they are still on the shelf.

Cycle count

Also known as: Cycle counting, Count

Counting a few bins at a time, continuously through the year, instead of shutting the warehouse for an annual stocktake.

Delegation

Also known as: Delegated location, Location delegation, Delegate

Handing one specific location’s receiving and inventory writing to Floormode, so a merchant can move locations across one at a time instead of switching the whole shop at once.

Delivery confirmation

Also known as: Confirmed delivery, Acknowledgement

The receipt a connected app sends back to say it applied a message — which is what lets Floormode show a queue as genuinely delivered rather than merely sent.

Discrepancy

Also known as: Variance

Any difference between what the system expected and what was physically found — on a receipt, at a bin during picking, or in a count.

Disposition

Also known as: Dispositions

The decision about where a returned unit goes once it has been graded: back to sellable stock, into damaged and quarantine, or written off.

Expected receipt

Also known as: Receipt, Inbound delivery

A delivery you are waiting on. It moves from expected, through being received, to received as the floor books it in line by line.

FEFO

Also known as: First expired first out, Expiry-first picking

First expired, first out: allocating the shortest-dated stock first so perishable goods leave before they expire. A per-warehouse policy on every plan.

Floor Mode

Also known as: Floor

The full-screen, scanner-first surface for warehouse staff: no admin chrome, giant tap targets, one job at a time, and no search box a scanner gun could trigger.

Fulfillment

Also known as: Fulfillments

The part of an order that one warehouse ships together. An order split across two sites has two fulfillments; each carries its own lines, shipments and state.

Handback

Also known as: Handover, Handing back, Handed back, Hand back, Handing over local stock

The controlled exit taken when a connection is switched off: Floormode freezes the local stock, sends the exact quantities back to the owning app, and only releases them once that app confirms it has them.

Hold

Also known as: On hold, Blocked

A deliberate block on an order, recorded with a reason, a note and usually a reference to the document being waited on. A hold is a decision, not a failure.

Incoming

Also known as: Incoming quantity, Inbound quantity

Units on an expected receipt that has not fully arrived — stock you have coming but cannot pick yet.

Kit

Also known as: Bundle, Kits and bundles

A product sold as one item but made of several components. Selling a kit consumes its components, which is why a kit’s availability depends on the scarcest part rather than on a stock figure of its own.

Kit expansion

Also known as: Bundle expansion, Expanded kit, Kit expansion on orders

Turning a kit ordered by a customer into the component lines the floor actually picks, so a picker is told to fetch real things on real shelves rather than a product that never sits in a bin.

Local item

Also known as: Local items, Not on Shopify, Virtual material, Raw material, Sub-assembly, Custom item

A good you stock and move in Floormode that does not exist on Shopify — an Assemblified raw material or sub-assembly, or a Logistified custom item — recognisable by an id starting VMAT-, ASM- or CSTM-.

Multi-order picking

Also known as: Cluster picking

Picking several orders in one walk, dropping each item into its own tote, so the sorting happens at the shelf instead of at a sort wall afterwards. Included in the Enhanced and Enterprise plans.

On hand

Also known as: On-hand, On hand quantity

The units physically in the building right now, whether or not they are already promised to an order.

Oversell

Also known as: Overselling

Selling beyond what is on hand. Deliberate oversell is a per-warehouse switch that is off by default; accidental oversell usually means a warehouse is not linked to a Shopify location.

Pack job

Also known as: Pack task

One parcel’s worth of work at the pack station: scan every item, choose the box, record the weight, and verify before a label is bought.

Parked message

Also known as: Parked, Parked messages, Parked delivery, Parked deliveries

A message to a connected app that is held, in order, while that app is not answering, and sent once it answers. It is visible, never a silent loss. A switched-off app gets no messages, so nothing is parked for it.

Pick batch

Also known as: Batch, Pick list

A set of lines one picker walks in one trip, sorted into pick-path order so the building is crossed once rather than repeatedly.

Pick path

Also known as: Pick sequence, Walking route

The order bins are walked in — zone, aisle, side, bay — which is what turns a list of lines into an efficient single pass through the warehouse.

Placement

Also known as: Slotting

Deciding which bin each product lives in, so the fastest sellers sit closest to packing. Warehouse software traditionally calls this slotting.

Production pick

Also known as: Component pick

Picking a work order’s components to a staging bin so they are ready to be built, rather than picking finished goods for a customer.

Purchase order

Also known as: PO, Purchase orders

An order placed on a supplier — the document in Logistified that names the supplier, the lines and the expected date, and which appears in Floormode receiving as the delivery to book in.

Putaway

Also known as: Put away

Moving received goods from the receiving area to the bin they belong in. With the receiving policy Straight to a shelf it happens during receiving; with a dock policy a put-away task follows the receipt (after the inspection, where the policy inspects). A work order’s finished goods that Floormode books onto the workbench bin WO-STAGE-01 get a put-away task too; an output that needs the receiver (serial numbers, or a date Floormode cannot work out) is received on its receipt instead.

Release

Also known as: Wave

Letting held picking work reach the floor, in a batch rather than continuously. Warehouse software traditionally calls this a wave.

Return request

Also known as: RMA, Return merchandise authorization

A customer’s request to send something back, before you approve it and it becomes a return. Warehouse software traditionally calls this an RMA.

Safety stock

Also known as: Buffer stock

The buffer held underneath the reorder point to absorb a late supplier or an unusually good week without going to zero.

Saved view

Also known as: Saved views, View tab

A list’s filters, sort and columns kept under a name: only you see it, unless you tick Share with everyone in this shop when you save it.

Short pick

Also known as: Short, Shortage

When a bin does not hold what the system expected. Recording it marks the line as not enough stock and posts the discrepancy against that specific bin, rather than quietly under-picking the order.

Single writer

Also known as: Single-writer rule, Inventory writer, Shopify writer

The rule that exactly one app may write a given location’s inventory back to Shopify, because two apps writing the same number overwrite each other and the stock figure drifts.

Staging bin

Also known as: Staging

A bin holding goods marshalled for a next step — components waiting for a build, or parcels waiting for despatch — rather than stock available to pick.

Unplaced item

Also known as: Unplaced items, Unplaced, Placing, Opening quantity

A local item the connected app has told Floormode about that has no bin here yet — it cannot be received, picked or counted until you place it by entering its opening quantity into a bin.

Work order

Also known as: Work orders, Build order

An instruction to build something — the document in Assemblified that names what is being made, how many, and which components it consumes, and which asks Floormode to pick those components.
